Portland Bible shot 49% from the field while holding Walla Walla to 40% from the field.

Walla Walla turned the ball over 30 times compared to 17 for the Wildcats.

“Coach Schweiss on the win:”I am very excited the way our guys approached this game with a lot on the line. Winning the conference title for our three seniors (Weeks, Coleman and Mahan) was big considering all we have been through this year. I am also excited to see us out rebound their big front line and hopefully we stay healthy and get ready for regionals.”

On February 8th at 4:00pm Central time, Portland Bible plays Ohio Christian University at the NCCAA National tournament in Springfield, MO.After finishing up his last season with Portland Bible College, Michael Cooper fulfilled one of his goals of playing professional basketball by signing with the Vancouver Volcanoes (Vancouver, WA).  The Volcanoes are in their 7th year of competition in the International Basketball League (IBL). Click here for more information on the Volcanoes or the IBL.

The 6’10 Cooper went to the open tryouts of over 60 players and made the final cut.  After he made the team, Cooper suffered a sprained ankle and sat out the first 2 weeks of the season. In his second game, Cooper played 14 minutes and finished with 8 points and 5 rebounds.

“I am excited for Coop, I know this was a goal of his last year and he has worked hard to get here. Despite only playing 4 years of basketball, he has come a long way. It will take him a while to adjust to the pace of the game, but I think once he does, he will become a good player at that level” Coach Schweiss.

Portland Bible scored the first 7 points of the game, and then opened up a big 13-4 lead, keyed by 3 steals.  Portland extended their lead to 23-11 behind accurate shooting, which had plagued them in their first 2 games of the tournament.  The game was very sloppy, given the early tipoff time and that both teams suffered emotional losses the night before.  The game featured 50 turnovers (26 for PBC), some of this due to the full court pressure of Valley Forge.  Portland Bible would take a 41-32 lead at intermission, keyed by 10 steals and an impressive 64% FG shooting.

The 2nd half would start the same way as the first half, with PBC continuing to hit open shots and scoring in transition.  At the 13:45 mark, Portland Bible built their first 20 point lead at 61-41.  The lead would stay between 18 and 24 points the remainder of the contest.  Portland Bible shot 64.5% from the field and held Valley Forge to 42% shooting.

“Overall, I was very pleased with our performance today. They (Valley Forge) are very similar to Walla Walla University (PCAC member) so we were very prepared for this game. We’ve had a great season and tomorrow will be a chance for all of our players to play significant minutes.  I am very proud of what this team has accomplished on and off the court this season” Coach Schweiss.

Portland Bible College will take on Dallas Christian University (TX) at 11am.  Last season, Portland defeated Dallas 67-64 in Bethany, Oklahoma. At 4pm, Southeastern (FL) plays Grace Bible (MI) for the National Championship.Portland Bible (22-10) advanced to the 2nd round of the NCCAA National Tournament with a 58-55 win over Atlanta Christian.  Portland Bible held Atlanta Christian to 33% FG shooting compared to their dismal 34%.  PBC outrebounded ACC 49-35 which proved to be the difference in the game.
Portland was led with 3 players in double figure scoring, Michael Cooper 13pts, 10rebs, 4 blocks (4 dunks), Stephen McCall’s 17pts and 6 rebs and Austin Hodges chipped in 13pts.  Atlanta was led by Keldrick Appling’s 12 pts and Gene Hartnetts 13pts.

Atlanta Christian got the game started with a jumper at the top of the key to go ahead 2-0.  Portland Bible responded with a Stephen McCall putback to tie the score at 2-2.  Michael Cooper then scored on an alley-oop dunk on a pass at halfcourt from Stephen McCall.  On the next possession, Michael Cooper’s dunk in transition put Portland up 6-2 which led to Atlanta’s first timeout.

With 8 minutes remaining in the first half, Portland Bible would extend their lead to 18-10 on a Mike White floater.  Both teams would continue to trade baskets, but Portland Bible would extend their lead to 26-14 with 8 minutes remaining in the 1st half.  Portland Bible would take a 31-24 lead into the break.

Stephen McCall would open the 2nd half with a three pointer to extend PBC’s lead to 10, 34-24.  Over the next 12 minutes, PBC would hold a 6 to 10 point cushion over Atlanta. Atlanta would close the Portland Bible lead to 43-38, but with only 7:46 remaining in the game, Stephen McCall scored 3 straight baskets to give PBC their biggest lead of the game 50-38.  Atlanta Christian would answer with consecutive baskets to quickly close the gap to 8 points, 50-42.

With 4:45 remaining, Atlanta Christian would hit back to back threes to close PBC’s lead to just 5 points.  Then again, with just 1:03 remaining, Atlanta would take just it’s second lead of the game at 55-54 on a putback attempt.   Austin Hodges made sure Atlanta’s lead was short-lived as he made a driving floater in the lane to put PBC back on top, 56-55. Down just one point, Atlanta’s Chris Cooper missed a contested jumper and Michael Cooper secured the rebound with just 20 ticks left.  Austin Hodges was quickly fouled, where he calmly sank both free throws.  Atlanta’s desperation three pointer was off the mark and Michael White snagged the rebound and was fouled.  Mike White missed the front end of the 1 and 1, but Atlanta was not able to put up a last second shot at the buzzer.

“I thought we played really well, especially on defense.  We made them shoot contested shots all night and our defense carried us.  We forced Atlanta to play zone the last 30 minutes of the game, which I’m not sure they were accustomed too.  We missed alot of open shots tonight, but they were good rhythm shots that didn’t go in.  To shoot only 34% and win is very impressive.  I think we got the kinks out and am very proud of how our team competed” Coach Schweiss.

Thursday at 4pm (Central Time), Portland Bible takes on #3 Seed Southeastern University (Lakeland, FL). The contest can be heard live at www.ccsnonline.com

“My wife Andrea has been a great help to me and the team, from making team dinners to helping them with homework. My brother Erik has also been a tremendous help in tactical areas and with recruiting.”

Junior’s Michael Cooper and Cameron Guyton earned 1st Team All-Conference and Freshman Austin Hodges shared the-MVP award with Multnomah’s Nick Kamlade.
